Rethinking the “Mobile First” Mantra in Serious Web Projects •
It’s hard to argue with the stats: mobile usage has skyrocketed. Most websites today see a majority of their traffic coming from smartphones and tablets. So it’s no surprise that for years now, the dominant design philosophy has been “Mobile First.”
And we get it. Of course, your website must look great and work flawlessly on a smartphone. Responsive design is not optional – it’s essential.
But let’s pause for a moment
Let’s imagine you’re planning a serious web project. Maybe it’s your company’s primary online presence, an ambitious e-commerce platform, or a brand experience that needs to shine. You’re investing time, energy, and budget. You’re either choosing the right agency — or carefully evaluating the one you’ve already hired.
At that stage, are you doing all this from your phone?
Probably not.
And honestly? Neither would we.
We don’t follow trends blindly – we design with purpose. Every decision we make is rooted in strategy, not buzzwords. “Mobile First” sounds modern, but for complex, high-value projects, it can lead to compromises you shouldn’t have to make. We focus on what really serves your brand, your audience, and your goals.
We Walk in Your Shoes
We always put ourselves in the client’s place before diving into a project. When we imagine researching agencies, exploring case studies, comparing designs, or analyzing structure and functionality, we’re doing it from a desktop. Or at least a laptop – with a big screen, a proper keyboard, and a full view of everything.
That’s not because we don’t care about mobile. On the contrary, we design with responsiveness in mind from the very beginning. But when it comes to priorities, we believe the first and most thorough version of your site should be the one people experience when it truly matters – on desktop.
Why Not Mobile First?
The mobile version of a website is, by its very nature, a simplified version. It’s focused, trimmed down, optimized for speed and ease of use on a small screen. That’s great, but it’s not where big decisions are made.
Your mobile site won’t show the full extent of your content strategy. It might not reveal the depth of your UX thinking or the richness of your brand visuals. Key features could be collapsed, minimized, or even removed for clarity and usability.
And if someone is thinking about investing thousands into a digital product, or trusting their brand to a design agency, they’re going to want to see the whole picture.
You’re not just getting a website – you’re getting a partner. We don’t just deliver polished visuals. We guide you through the process, think like your users, and build with the long game in mind. Our job isn’t to impress you with jargon — it’s to give you a digital product you’ll be proud to share on any screen.
Changing Agencies Is Expensive
Here’s something we often hear:
“We already started the project with another team, but we’re not sure it’s going in the right direction.”
That happens. But it’s costly. Handing the project over to a new developer or designer often means starting over, both in time and money. That’s why your decision, ideally, should be made with full clarity. And full clarity means full-screen.
Desktop First Doesn’t Mean Desktop Only
To be clear: this isn’t a rejection of mobile design. We’re not saying it doesn’t matter, it absolutely does. We build responsive, elegant mobile versions of every site we touch. And we test rigorously across screen sizes and devices.
But we are saying this:
If you’re investing in a digital presence that matters, don’t let the hype around “Mobile First” distract you from how real decisions are made.
Start big. Start smart. Start with the version that gives you (and your audience) the most complete experience of your brand.
